The Difference Between Choking and Gagging
If someone is gagging, they still have some air entry and are typically making a gagging, coughing, or retching sound.
If someone is choking, the airway is fully blocked. When this happens, they cannot cough, speak, cry, or breathe. They may have blue lips or a blue face and need immediate intervention.
Safety Tips to Prevent Choking

Supervise every meal or snack – always stay nearby when your child is eating.
-
Have kids sit upright – avoid eating while lying down, walking, running, or sitting in a stroller/car seat.
-
Cut food into small pieces (especially for toddlers).
-
Mash or shred soft foods.
